App security and piracy
« on: October 14, 2011, 07:30:46 AM »
My friend said that there is widespread piracy with Android apps being downloaded, renamed, repackaged, re-signed and passed off as the pirate's own work. He showed me these links although I don't understand the details of how the piracy works and how to prevent my app being pirated.

Have you any tips on what I should do to make it harder to pirate my app?

Hi GeorgeC

I don’t know how prevalent this piracy is but it won’t work on HAC built Android apps because we have taken precautions to counter this.

I can’t give you details but suffice to say that if someone tries rebrand your app as their own then the app won’t get past startup and will quit.

By default anti-piracy measures aren’t built into to the standard ways (Eclipse & Android SDK) of building Android apps but I guess most developers soon add their own anti-piracy measures. It will be the newbie developers who have most problems as they won’t know where to start but at least thats taken care of when building apps with HAC.
